4/24/08: Full Committee Hearing: "Child Abuse and Deceptive Marketing by Residential Programs for Teens" - The Committee held a hearing to examine allegations of child abuse and deceptive marketing at residential programs for teens, including boot camps, wilderness camps, therapeutic boarding schools, and behavior modification facilities. The hearing also examined legislation to prevent child abuse in these programs by establishing standards for the programs.
The committee heard about the results of undercover work from the Government Accountability Office and from individuals who attended residential programs when they were teenagers.

A movie is coming out based on Kids Helping Kids of New Jersey, it's called Over the GW and the writer/director is a survivor of the program.
Maia Szalavitz just came out with an excellent article in Reason Magazine that takes you through the history of Straight and it's off spring, all the way to present time. You should be shocked and appalled when you see how prevalent this problem still is today and how involved our government is in allowing this abuse and crime to continue. Mel Riddile the executive director of Straight in Virginia for years, was awarded principle of the year in 2005 for Fairfax County and is the new Principal at TC Williams High School. He knew of the abuse and allowed it to go on.
Mel Sembler was awarded with 2 ambassadorships by the Bush's and has donated a huge amount of money to the Bush famliy over the years. He is currently on the financial board for Mitt Rowney's to raise money for his upcoming Presidential Campaign. Mitt is being supported by a child abuser, as is Joe Lieberman and many others. These politicians committed crimes and have been rewarded by our government. For now.
FOX News printed an article about a few years ago, regarding straight, but it was pulled within 24 hours. I wonder why? You can view it here.
